My name is Dr Chloe Buiting, but you might know me better as the "Jungle Doctor"....
If you had told me years ago that I’d be working with Sir David Attenborough, sitting on conservation boards, speaking on global stages, or even seeing my face on a Times Square billboard, I would have laughed.
Because honestly? I was just a girl from a little island in Australia, a crippling introvert who wasn’t top of my class and who faced rejection even getting into vet school. I stumbled my way through, faced setbacks, and had no idea how to break into conservation. I just knew I wanted to work with wildlife—and I refused to give up.
Like so many others, I thought a veterinary career meant small animal practice, surgery, or maybe zoo work if I was lucky. But the reality? Vet medicine is so much bigger than I ever imagined. I took every opportunity I could—fieldwork, research, clinical roles, advisory positions, science communication, conservation projects—and slowly, I built a career that blended all of my passions.
Today, I wear many hats—wildlife vet, science communicator, conservationist, board director, policy advisor, and now, a mum. My career is a mix of clinical and non-clinical work, from dehorning rhinos in Africa to advising The Earthshot Prize and serving as the youngest board director for leading conservation organisation, Zoos Victoria.
Along the way, I’ve had the honour of working on global conservation initiatives, being featured in major media, speaking on television, and growing a 350,000-strong community across social media. I’ve written books, delivered talks, and helped shape conservation policies—but at my core, I’m still just someone who had a dream and figured out how to make it happen.
And that’s why I created this guide—to provide you with the tools and resources to pursue your own dream carer in conservation, whatever that may look like to you.
